I found this while digging out a 2014 Brown Estate Zin. A little past it’s prime. The black fruits are muted but still present. The tannins are softened and the wine has a terrific, smooth mouthfeel. This was purchased at The Wine Vault (San Diego) at a winemaker dinner. Served with grilled chicken in a culpepper sauce.

Lots of 2012s in N. Cal. got away from the winemakers, with sometimes dilute flavors or high sugars. Not here. Rockpile Ridge has always been the least distinctive of the SVDs from this winery, IMO, but this is a really good example of what Zin should aspire to. Nice dark berry flavors, but restrained, framing acids that don't overplay, enough tannin that it held up with richer food.

Notes of red fruits and licorice. Medium bodied, juicy and pleasantly easy drinking. Matched with bbq pork chops but I think this could work nicely as a steak wine as well.

Pretty easy drinker (unusually)...more dry creek valley in nature than rockpile, but very enjoyable. Sort of in the middle of the pack for the mauritson rockpile zins we've had.

Interesting zin. Black cherry and plum fruit fading, replaced by earthy, red meat, cocoa.
