With Korean meatballs on a Friday, departure from the usual. 2012 is a ripe year, and the vintage shows compared to Robin Akhurst's usually more austere and savory Syrah from this vineyard. We had a Myriad a couple weeks ago that was very typical for Las Madres, with lots of olive and black pepper notes, cured meat and the like. This was surprisingly upfront with the fruit for both the vineyard and the maker. Really good stuff, and there was backbone as well, but this is a bit of an outlier. If you haven't gone all the way to old school N. Rhone (which hardly exists as it gets warmer), this is a great transition from warmer climate Syrah. Looking forward to cracking the 2013s in a year or two.

Xmas Eve dinner, with lamb chops. I really like the combo of lamb with syrah, the gamy meat and the savory syrah, the tannin to cut through the fat. Many preparations of lamb work with Syrah. But with so many to choose from, which one? Decided on this because it has a nice balance of those Las Madres characteristics: Olives, meatiness, fruit, tannin. Good call, as it was hitting on all the cylinders. I did decant it about an hour before we settled down for dinner. Went quickly. One more in the cellar, then on to the 2013s.

Very likable. This might be my last bottle, but pretty enjoyable all the same.

Still going strong. Silky texture, robust fruit, and a solid acd backbone.

I like the nose on this.
This really spreads out on the palate. A little deficient in acidity for my tastes, but this isn't bad.
