I don't expect too much from Trader Joe's. I don't drink their three buck chuck and their price on wines available in other places is often not competitive. This wine for $13 is exceptionally drinkable. It is dark for a merlot, dry and with a smooth finish, mixed berry flavor. Whoever they bought it from (Mondavi? Stag's Leap?) knew what they were doing.

This wine come on with an immediate attack of red fruits, largely currant, but follows with some black fruit, plum and blackberry. Overall it almost resembled a Zinfandel as much as a Merlot It had medium legs and a surprisingly long finish. Taken as a whole, this is one that entered the mouth as a cheap California red, then did surprising and very good things. I suspect that what I'm getting is a young wine that will get considerably better in a couple of years.

On second day, tasted after Caymus Zin, and it held up. Pleasant anise and dust/earth on nose. Balanced palate. Very enjoyable, killer QPR
