  • Very good for the vintage. Showing no heat. Classic cherry and tar. One of the very best 2009s.

  • Medium to light red with browny hues; fresh caramel, figs, light structure with intensity; soft enticing attack, mellow caramel, some pepper, lots of taste and nuances, ending with some tannins biting mildly; all in all a very pleasurable wine with softness and tertiary notes as a theme

  • A lovely clear pale ruby, a touch darker than expected. Very aromatic - lots of orange (fades with air), rosemary, rose and tar. In the mouth the tar is really dominant. Great balance and approachable at an early stage - drank well with only 2hrs in a decanter and improved further for 4hrs. Very classic and persistent wth vibrant rose, ripe raspberry and smoke finish with air. Really enjoyed this. It's best years are ahead, but found this for €80 and couldn't pack it to take home. No regrets though. 95+pts.

  • A warm vintage for sure, but this bottle really is 'all that'. Opened alongside a 2010 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo over 8 hours and even with extended ageing (which should help the more structured vintage look better), I thought this was consistently the better bottle. God only knows how magic the 2010 Pie Franco could be. A numerical score for the 2009 would be somewhere in the mid/hi-90s.

  • Opened in the name of "science". Great bottle of wine, but hands off on the rest for at least 5 years. Less "vintage character" than most. Fairly muted aromatically, with notes of red fruit, spice, and anise coming through. Beautiful on the palate. More acidity than expected, and great balance overall. Tannins there but buried in the fruit. Overall, fantastic. Should go a good 15+ years from here.
