  • Rachel’s bottle at Tonny’s. Simple, pleasant, food-friendly - this was a nice example of an assyrtiko. The nose just brought me back to Santorini, where we bought the bottle, with its notes of beeswax, chalk and white fruit, maybe a touch of fava beans and white flowers at the sides. The palate had rounded out a bit from its youth, putting on a bit of a creamy depth and some stone fruited flavours - think peach and nectarine hints - to go along with the crisper white fruit and grapefruit zest notes of its youth. Rather neutral in character otheriwse, but far from uninteresting. You could just about to make out the 14.5% alcohol on the finish, which had a blush of heat along with a touch of spice. Other than that, this was fairly decently balanced and altogether, a pretty nice bottle.

  • Fresh fruit character. Nothing too acidic though, probably apricot, peach, and maybe even melon. Oak, and creamy mouthfeel. Very smooth. Great intensity and very long. Really like this, although I'd probably rather have a few bottles of the usual barrel fermented sigalas instead :)

  • Single vineyard Assyrtiko, raised in oak, nice story behind it but this was really a disappointment. The bottle was fine, no oxidation or TCA. Other than a light oaky dynamic on the nose the wine felt blunt and flat, no character, no depth. Assyrtiko can produce so much more than this.
