I probably had around a dozen bottles of Calera Viognier back when vintages '93 - '96 were fresh releases, but not so many since then. Those older bottlings had a lush, rich forwardness to them that was hard to resist, like biting into a super-ripe juicy peach. This iteration is notably more restrained. The dominant element on the nose is chalk dust, and on the palate a certain fruity tanginess, like a Sweet Tart that puts the Tart before Sweet. There are still notes of white peaches and (less ripe) apricots, but also vibrant acidity. Blind I might peg it as a godello. All in all it's not an unappealing style of viognier but it's not quite what I was expecting based on memories of yore.

I served this at my 7/11/15 Low Country Boil. It had a rich, fragrant bouquet of pear, apple, apricot, mint and mineral aromas. The palate was rich and layered with flavors of green apple, pear, melon, apricot and minerals. 90+

w asian spiced white fish. This worked very well. The wine was a bit unsettled and different than the bottle we had a few weeks ago. Overall very solid, great viognier flavors of spice and flowers. Probably should have served colder or could have used a decant.

Nice wine. There is some pear on the nose with some citrus notes. A very unique Viognier.
