Absolutely knockout nose of earth, coffee, forest floor and dark fruit. Similar flavours follow on the palate, which is soft but persistent. Like the 2007 next to it this has superb poise and elegance that is hard to describe but unmistakeable. An amazing pair, a pleasure to savour properly over a good lunch.

La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): Small La Paulee pour. Dense and powerful with ever-so-charming black cherry and roasted meat. I have not tasted this wine in a decade, and it better now vs 2011. But that's Rousseau Chambertin, even in a forward vintage like 2000.

(Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin) Medium red color with clear meniscus; good tart red fruit and beef broth nose; delicious, tart red fruit with good minerality and acidity; medium finish

La Paulée de Los Angeles Gala Dinner (The Fairmont - Santa Monica CA): Small glass. Amazing degree of balance and substantial weight, there is so much here, with no rush to drink this up soon.

Served blind. Red fruit with sumptuous mineral and balance. Outshone by its CSJ sibling tonight!
