  • This Lemberger from Red Mountain in Washington is dark ruby almost garnet in the glass. On the nose, the wine is redolent with aromas of black cherry and cardamom. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied offering the same black cherry and cardamom, as well as the famous Red Mountain "funk" (an earthy, musky, mineral-driven panoply of flavors that are characteristic of wines made from the region's volcanic soil). Has a medium-length finish with silky tannins. Its cellaring potential is questionable, so I would definitely consume it now. An excellent example of an uncommon varietal (aka Blaufränkisch and Kekfrankos) that is sometimes compared to Merlot. Slightly softer than Kiona's excellent 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon. At less than $20 per bottle, the wine has an outstanding QPR and is a real standout in the challenging and rather cool 2011 vintage. Can't wait for the warmer 2012 vintage.

(Kiona Vineyards Estate Bottled Lemberger Red Mountain) A moderately aromatic wine with notes of dried orange peel, dusky spices, cinnamon, and wet stone. The palate has sweet fruit flavors and pasty tannins. An enjoyable wine best suited for the dinner table. 100% Lemberger. Aged 14 months in French and American oak. 13.5% alcohol.
