  • Well here is a vintage often overlooked in the Yarra Valley and the first time i had tried an 87 YY DR 1. In fact first 1987 wine for a few years. I have one bottle in my cellar but this one came from Timmy Two Shoes vast empire of Australia's rarest wines at the 3pm soiree with beef burger sliders with Marky W.
Unfortunately my immediate attention was instantly comparing it to its 2 year older big brother- the 1985 Dry Red 1, which i swing between whether i love it or my wife more from time to time. In Yodamarks opinion the 87 looked way behind the 85 but this was a little unfair to compare it. So i refocused, hoovered another burger and put sweet loving memories of the 85 out of the brain and assessed the 87 on its own merits. It smelt a little funky first up , a bit forest floor pongy but this soon blew off. the colour was good for the age and the nose soon partied with mulberries, hints of blackcurrent, cedar and cigars and Cabernet leaf. Reminded me a little of old Rocky Cabernet. All medium bodied in structure unlike the full bodied youthful 85, but lovely similar mouthfeel to the bouquet with wonderful length. Actually quite a masterpiece by Bailey given the conditions. it continued to open and the midweight body and flavour released itself from its slumber with some oxygen and doubled in density. Holds it head very high against its older and younger siblings and well worth seeking out. As usual with YY DR1 of Carrodus era there is no rush to consume them. it wasn't going anywhere and good condition bottles have at least another 10 years. Yummy.

  • Still a stunning wine in it's 31st year - stylish, rich bouquet and well balanced flavour with deep, blackcurrent and damson fruit, rich oak and soft tannins.

  • 12.9% abv. Lovely leafy Cabernet nose to start, with some tinned peas/greenness. Savoury on the palate. The greenness slowly blew off to reveal a beautifully focussed and balanced wine that's drinking really well now. A very satifying wine from what is supposed to be a weak vintage.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon night: Some bricking. Lovely deep and complex nose of cassis, methol, green olives and anchovies. Palate very dry. Leathery fruit. Medium-body. Good length. Nice.

  • Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 1 - The Complete Vertical 1975 to 2006 (The Ledbury, London): Deep peppery nose, earthy, possibly a touch of TCA, raw, grippy, high acid and yet once again, enough fruit there for this to be a compelling, enticing drink
