  • Back on amazing form. It is hard to resist opening this wine from the half case I bought. It really is beguiling from the moment you pop it. Such a lovely multi layered nose that one just wants to sniff and sniff. Medium to dark ruby - certainly darker than most Burgs. Nose is primary sweet red fruit of strawberry and plumb, with floral blossom notes too. Then lots of secondary and tertiary: sweet pipe tobacco, white pepper, and a fair amount of vanilla. Nothing is overwhelming. So nicely balanced. After an hour some licorice and cigar box. Almost don’t want to drink it! On the palette it is medium + sweet, medium + acidity and tannins. Pronounced sweet red fruit of plumb again and a nice long finish. The combo of intensity but balance and complexity makes this an exceptional entry level Burg. I am not sure it will get much better, but who knows. It’s already fab and remains one of my top cellar pics. Just wish I had bought several cases when it first was offered!

  • No detailed note this time, other than to say I was not as enthusiastically impressed with this second bottle. Still nice. But not as fab I was hoping - or as I experienced last time. That said, Rossignol bought at $50 a bottle? Is a great steal!

  • Oh my! This is such a lovely effort from Mr R. Medium ruby in color, and a lovely nose that reveals all sorts of treasures over an hour or so. Red fruit of raspberry and some blueberry to start, and then a basketful of white pepper and cedar and so much else; floral notes and leather and ...more spice. A pot-pori of Pinot magic. On the pallete is medium in alcohol, medium acidity and already nicely integrated tannins. Medium+ intensity flavor of red fruit - and the white pepper and a touch of red cherry. The 2010 of this wine was how I discovered N Rossignol, and was probably my “gateway drug” to a Burgundy addiction. Only a few years ago it was a relative steal. Now that his fame and prices are rising it is not quite the bargain it once was. But is still something special and fresh. A great example of a early drinking Burg that is a delight, yet still older-school and with so much more depth than even the best Washington or NZ challengers that it is a close cousin of. If this had stayed in the $50 a bottle range it would be be my firm recommendation as the way to become a Burgundy fan.
