Monastrell - a great love. Took a little while to open up. But then an explosion of aromatics: cloves, saddle leather, crushed blackberries, wet earth, woodsmoke. An oily, unctuous wine of great power and expansive generosity. Good, firm grip but not excessively astringent. Leathery, velvety, richly textured. Marzipan, chocolate, molasses. Good acidity and tension. A very enjoyable, hedonistic wine. A sort of "phwoarr" wine. Mmm...

Dark maroon color, red edge. Nose with ripe black fruit, i.e. currants, blackberries. Medium bodied nice balance after one day of air. Decent finish at this point with balance despite the high alcohol. Tannin and acid part of the balance. Quite enjoyable tonight. Prior night was a bit harsh.

Clear, dark crimson with salmon pink rim, with sporadic slow-moving medium-sized tears. Clean, full intensity, with aromas of blackcurrants, mulberries, black pepper, anise, and a whiff of rubber and mince pies. Dry, med body, med+ tannins, med- acidity, med alcohol, with further tastes of cherries jubilee, stewed plums, pu’er leaves, oxo cubes, and milk chocolate. Nice finish and balance but the rubber nose affects it too much.
