This Syrah from the cooler White Hawk vineyard is garnet in the glass with a redolent nose of rhubarb, blackberry and what I call the White Hawk "funk" ( collectively, earth, truffles, leather, smoked meat). On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with the same rhubarb and blackberry, as well as licorice and muted pepper and vanilla. The wine has a lengthy and memorable finish suggesting age-worthiness. A dead-ringer for a Northern Rhone and proof positive that the White Hawk vineyard, which has been sourced by Ojai, and Herman Story among others, produces delicious, terroir-driven wines. A surprisingly good wine from the challenging and some would say too cool 2011 vintage. I paid around $20 for the bottle, and at that price, it has an outstanding QPR. 4 bottles tasted with consistent notes.
