Yellow gold in the glass. Clean and focused nose of burning rubber, eraser, and ethanol fumes. Sweet, off dry, and oily on the palate with notes of oil of oregano and grape seed oil in addition to ripe mango and pineapple. Some toasty tones with lemon and honey. Interesting and in great shape.
Amber-gold color. Classy nose of apple, pineapple, lemon, toffee and mixed petrol (fusel oil ?). On arrival, unctuously-textured for standard Auslese; thick, almost syrupy. The declassified must weights were without doubt quite a mixed lot. Youthfully sweet with the finishing zing of (the 1990 signature) stiff acidic lift. Wow, this is drinking as an earlier midlife wine than we'd imagined. Finished long. Would it have gotten better in another decade ? Probably, but I'll never know. Bottle #1 of one.
This is one of those wines which expands your whole concept of what wine is. I had no prior experience with 20 year old high end auslese. Blind, I would have guessed beerenauslese. Deep copper gold color. Hugh rush of apricot, peach, cinammon and honeysuckle. Very sweet, even sweeter than young JJ Prum auslese I have had from the same vineyard. Extremely thick, luscious and liquorous, easily could have been a dessert wine. Yet there was good acidity to keep it from being cloying - but the two of us could not finish the entire bottle.
