As soon as it lands in the decanter, the 1949 Léoville Poyferré shows an enchanting nose, full of 1949 style. This is brimming with raspberry and strawberry with a gorgeous natural sweetness, potent yet elegant. Complemented by allspice, red licorice, and cedar, this feels complete. In an era when the assemblage wasn't that different between the three Léovilles, this still comes across as very Poyferré. If doesn't fan out on the palate the way the Léoville Barton does, this is still a wonderful drink. The palate is a little hard and doesn't share the generosity of the nose, so it's time to drink. But what an enjoyable drink it remains!

From a very cold cellar and purchased on release. Cedar and cigar box. Tobacco. Ripe and sweet. Balanced. Most tannins resolved but still some noted on the finish. This is in prime time now. I quite liked it. 94

Really nice. This has a definite Poyferré personality, similar black-fruit flavors to more recent Poyferrés but this bottle, as you'd expect, is totally resolved and at peak. Despite its black pitch it offers some fruit flavors in the apple family seasoned with a sort of oatmealy character; there is still a wisp of tannin remaining which is enough to give the wine a texture that's more matte than gloss.

Avery Family Cellar Wine Dinner - The Worst Wine Dinner of my life (The Grill Room at Rosewood DC): En magnum. Excellent concentration, a big scale wine. Unfortunately madeirized.
