The amazing 1967 Bertani Recioto della Valpolicella Classico Superiore Amarone beat 2008 Montrose heads on! It exemplifies an extraordinary journey of flavor and time. At its core, this wine displays a youthful exuberance rare for its age.

The nose unfolds with a tapestry of Valpolicella classicism - sour dark cherries, blackberries, stewed plums, intertwined with baked strawberries and a hint of rhubarb, all draped in a bouquet of red, dark, and blue florals. The body mirrors this lushness; it’s a symphony of rich, round, and juicy notes, with a backbone of excellent viscosity. If you¡d expect sweetness, well, you simply wouldn’t find it here.

Like plums and figs overrun a great Bordeaux with love and passion…

Each sip rewards me with an intricate dance of flavors – from bright and dried fruits and berries, all the way to cognac aromas. This is balanced by earthy undertones of tobacco leaf and sage. The wine’s structure is a remarkable feat, presenting a tension and balance that mesmerizes. Considering its age, this is a special specimen. The finish is a long, beautiful cascade of elegance and sophistication of tobacco, dried fruits, British Christmas fruit cake and love…

An amzing wine that isn't going anywhere soon. Beautiful beyond what I have ever enjoyed in a matured red wine ever before.

  • This is extremely youthful as a 1967 gets. Yet, it shows its elegant bottle age.

The nose reveals classic Valpolicella. Sour dark cherries, blackberries, black raspberries, raisins, stew plums, raspberries, poached/baked strawberries, rhubarb, bright fruit liqueur, Kirsch cherries, licorice/cola notes, cognac/brandy hues, touch of V/A-bandaid, dark, rich earth sandstone, fresh tobacco leaf, tomatoes with leaf, hints of sage, eucalyptus/mint notes, dry top soils, crushed rock powder, with fresh & withering; red, dark, blue and purple florals.

The body is; lush, rich, round & juicy. Excellent viscosity. Sour dark cherries dry raisins, dates, blackberries, black raspberries, stew plums, raspberries, poached/baked strawberries, rhubarb, bright fruit liqueur, Kirsch cherries, licorice/cola notes, cognac/brandy hues, touch of V/A-bandaid, dark, rich earth sandstone, river stone, fresh tobacco leaf, tomatoes with leaf, hints of sage, eucalyptus/mint notes, dry top soils, crushed rock powder, with bright, fresh & withering; red, dark, blue and purple florals. The acidity is flat out sick. The tension, structure, balance & length are a stunning rare treat with a wine of this age. The long, beautiful finish is; well knitted, polished and extremely elegant. It is true wire to wire

For the most part, the older Valpolicella gets the better it is!

  • I think that it is impossible to be fair and give this wine a numerical score. This is a classic example of Jean Trimbach's comment "...after a certain age there are no great wines, just great bottles."

I have had recent bottles that were loaded with brilliant cherries and red flowers. This was not the case here, however this was a beautiful wine and what you would expect from a 52 year old bottle. More like a great aged tawny Port from Graham's or Taylor as opposed to a red wine.

Ruby heart with amber edges, a nose of Christmas; fruit cake, nutmeg, oranges, clove; a wine that went on and on. the mouth was pleasing, not concentrated like some other bottlings, but still delicious. If you have this wine in your cellar it is not going to get better, so drink it up.

  • Unquestionably an 'Oh My God' wine from the beautifully dark crimson purple, incredibly youthful color, to the mature haunting aromas to the taste on the palate (almost hard to describe, can just say utterly complex with the age, but still fresh and alive). Damn this was eye opening. Had been sitting perfectly stored in a friends cellar since the early 80's (if not sooner) and its perfect storage showed. The 2004 end drink date on CT is a joke, this one had decades to go.

  • Soy and celery in the bouquet and on the palate. This bottle was clearly too old. No score.
