  • The cork was wet and fell apart when removed. The finish was the only down side. When compared to today's wine you will find the wine to be smoother and lighter when compared to the bold flavors of today. Aging will cause this. I would recommend this wine for anyone who really appreciates fine wine. If you are just going to drink wine because its there, forget it.

  • First note: I hope I have classified this under the correct wine. All it says on the label in Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Robert Mondavi and then at the bottom of the label "Oakville, California". None of the labels on CT match up to the label on the bottle I have, and there are so many Mondavi wines it is hard to select if I have the right one.

Wow. My first old Californian Cab Sav and this is like an elegant old lady who still has a bit of spirit about her. Delicate colour - lots of bricking. At first the nose is beef juice, soy sauce and sweet balsamic. Then it puts on weight over the next 2 hours to reveal eucalyptus, liquorice and spices. In the mouth light bodied but with incredible complexity. Fantastic tannins - fine but also quite tangy. After 3 hours there is caramel here and mint notes. More meat flavours coming through - really an excellent wine. This has a classic old-Bordeaux nose and the wine is 12% ABV - how long since you have seen that in a Californian Cabernet?

The cork was drenched and fell apart in the bottle - the wine was a little musty and discoloured but my goodness, it soons gets into its stride. Utterly superb. This is the wine I think I will take to the Cellar Tracker London event and I think it will hold its own against some first growths quite easily. I dont normally score wines but this is in the mid-90s. Probably lacks on the follow through and depth to truly be a great wine but that is being ungracious. Superb.
