Tasted by Winetex on 1/27/2010 & rated 89 points: Clear ruby color; Floral and raspberry fruit on the slight nose; Flavors included cherry and raspberry fruit, a touch of tar with more florals and earthy, spice notes on the finish. Medium weight, balanced and clearly Nebbiolo. A good match with food but missing structure for continued long-term aging. Drink now or short-term hold. Decanted about 30 minutes before drinking with good results. (318 views)
Tasted by Purple Drank on 5/14/2009 & rated 89 points: Translucent ruby colored. Faint perfume of violets and sweet-tart fruit on the nose. Cherry, crisp cranberry juiciness, and maybe a bit of tar. Great acidity & just enough tannins still intact. My first Gattinara but I really liked it. The crispness stood up well to a ragu alla bolognesa sauce. Drink now? I can't see this getting any better... (431 views)
Tasted by guitarkim on 11/8/2008 & rated 91 points: Skrevet etter hukommlesen: Matfølge: helstekt ytrefilét av okse, olivenolje, potetgrateng. Fantastisk! Velutviklet og strukturert Gattinara med lang og fast ettesmak. Tydelige men runde tanniner. Kjempevin og meget godt kjøp! (359 views)
Tasted by violahenny on 2/4/2008 flawed bottle: Flawed? Cola edge. Ash. Violets. Should wait a few more years. (633 views)
Tasted by sstra on 12/29/2006 & rated 89 points: Sweet fruit / raspberry on the nose with some tobacco. Dry to medium dry - medium bodied - a well balanced wine with fruit and some acidic aftertones. A good wine. (787 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 3/5/2006 & rated 75 points: Acme DeGrazia dinner. I was looking forward to this wine as my first Gattinara and found it very disappointing. Ruby in color, it showed none of the Nebbiolo character or structure I’ve come to expect. Very flat, thin and simple, this wine tasted like it will be dead within 3 years ( and hardly worth drinking before then ). 50+8+7+5+5 = 75 (1111 views)

Vignaioli Piemontesi (Italian only)
Regional History: The wines of Piemonte are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piemonte was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piemontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine - most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a French woman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour - later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy - this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. Outside of the Langhe, the most prominent area of wine production in Piemonte is the chain of sub-alpine hills that run through the provinces of Novara and Vercelli. Here the Romans introduced spionia, an ancient variety that thrived in foggy climates. Whether this was in fact a genetic ancestor of Nebbiolo is unknown, but the derivation of its name, Spanna, is now how the locals refer to this noble grape. The Morainic soils, mostly deposited along the Sesia River, are of glacial origin and produce more medium-bodied, aromatically driven nebbiolo than in the Langhe. The appellations of note in Novara are Gattinara, Lessona and Bramaterra, and in Vercelli are Ghemme, Fara, Boca, and Szizzano.
