Revisiting another bottle with a better cork and fill, this 1964 Tour du Pin Figeac showed superbly, bursting from the decanter and glass in a roar of singed, smoky black fruit and plum, with lovely nuances of leather, smoke and loamy soil. The 1964 La Tour du Pin Figeac is a lovely, rustic Saint Émilion, generously endowed with the ripe black fruit and glycerin of this excellent right-bank vintage. The comparatively muted nose is dominated by ripe black cherry, loamy soil and some more funky, bretty notes; it is on the palate that the wine excels, with its abundance of youthful fruit and its decadent, luscious texture. Surprising length and complexity on the finish elevates this into an outstanding wine.
