  • Slightly translucent, deep red cherry color. Somewhat oak-driven nose with aromas of sweet vanilla, toasty wood, some sweet strawberry and blueberry notes, a little bit of chocolate milkshake and a hint of crowberry jam. Overall the nose feels very sweet, even jammy, and quite over-the-top. The wine is full-bodied, very ripe and slightly sweet with moderately pronounced grapey fruit and flavors of sweet blueberries, some vanilla, a little bit of savory wood spice, a hint of strawberry jam and a touch of cocoa and milk chocolate. The wine is moderately high in acidity to keep the wine fresh enough, but not nearly enough to offset the inherent sweetness of the fruit. The tannins are quite light and mellow, feeling somewhat inadequate for a wine this rich and full-bodied. The mouthfeel is quite smooth and silky. The finish is ripe and sweetly-fruited with quite lengthy flavors of vanilla, bilberries, blackcurrant jam, some sweet toasty oak, a little bit of strawberry marmalade and a hint of woody bitterness.

An interesting effort to make a serious red wine out of Baco Noir, but one that suffers a lot from the excessive use of oak. I often see how Baco Noir needs to take a lot of oak to balance out its naturally high acidity, but to me, this style of wine seems just completely overdone: the acidity could've been much higher and the wine still would've come across as perfectly balanced. Instead, the tannins - that could've brought more balance to the wine - seem quite well-manicured by the new oak treatment, and the fruit department is quite heavily compressed between the overwhelming wood notes of vanilla, cocoa and milk chocolate. Not really my type of wine: too sweet, too soft and too oaky. I'm still interested in tasting other Baco Noir wines, because I've heard that they can make great wines out of it. However, based on this example, I really can't concur with the opinion that Henry of Pelham is the best producer of Baco Noir out there. However, if all the wines are just like this and this is the best stuff you can get your hands on, maybe I just should leave Baco Noir be? At 22,70€, this wine was quite overpriced for the style.

  • Decanted ca 30 minutes. On the nose ripe dark and red berries with a whiff of oak. Medium bodied, smooth and gentle tannins, delivering tart red (lingon)berries, notes of cranberries with a discreet kiss of oak and quite firm acidity. Felt initially slightly austere but improved with a little airtime. Never had Baco Noir before but it reminds a bit of Pinot. A good quaffer.

  • Cherry/berry, rubber, smoke and sweet spice nose. Juicy, dry but sweet-centred palate with vibrant acidity. Good length, sweet cocoa finish.
