This deep golden wine was tasted in double-blind fashion, with the bottle being generously provided by K.J. Intense aromatics of honey, petrol, apricots, peaches and white flowers are followed by a medium-bodied palate with similar flavors. The wine's mild sweetness is beautifully balanced by its crisp acidity. Listed as 13.5%, the alcohol lurks nicely in the background. Layered and mouth-coating in the middle, it closes with impressive length. This 11-year-old Riesling is undoubtedly at its apogee. Enjoy it over the next 3-4 years. Drink now-2019.
A private dinner (at home): Like the Riesling Schlossberg Cuvée Ste.-Catherine 2004 tasted in October, this now comes across as quite mature - verging on tired. Honeyed, earthy, attractive enough but a bit soft on the palate and with a lack of drive and length. It seems like the Weinbach 2004's are running out of steam much quicker than I had anticipated only three years ago. Drink up.
