  • Holiday dinner at the French Embassy, Washington D.C. (French Embassy): This showed the most structure and seemed almost steely in aspect and yet time in glass brought forth more nuanced aromatics. Much depth to the palate, density, and pleasing texture. Ripe - not overripe - fruit make this a very successful 2003 indeed. Bravo!

  • Sushi at Shinji. Ruby red, slightly cloudy. Outstanding aromatics on this one - wild strawberries, red kiwi, dried roses, incense, earth, red tea, lavender and truffle. This was another great example of a 2003 that isn't too ripe, too sweet and too hot. A well balanced wine, but just slightly lacking in acidity, so with time and as the wine warmed up, it became slightly flabby. (that's just me being overly critical though). Good balance on the palate as well, with very silky and smooth tannin. Lots of wild and fresh red fruit, along with sandalwood, leather, forest floor, braised meat, ginger and coffee. A really excellent bottle of wine, and it went well with the red fish.

  • Dinner in St. Louis (Niche): Popped this about 90 minutes before dinner. I was worried at first. The aromatics seemed astringent and flat, so I got worried about it being a bad bottle. Luckily, I brought it along to dinner and let it sit for a while. Soon, the wine woke up a bit and picked up a lot of floral accents along with some undertones of earth and meat. I haven't drank many 2003 Burgundy's, but I really liked the juiciness of this. Probably didn't have the 2nd and 3rd gear that other vintages of this wine might have, but I found myself enjoying it quite a bit. The final glass of the night (about 6 hours after opening) saw the earth/meat/florals develop even more...guess I should have given it more air!

  • A very enjoyable restrained Pinot while lacking any Clos de la Roche interest.

  • No formal notes, but better than I remember- it's vintage characteristics still evident, but not as prominent as the tasty, deep, earthy notes I found delicious.
