  • My choice for a Rhône style theme with my local group.

Definitely the oldest No Girls I’ve opened. As expected, these have a Burgundian flair to them in the way they are made when compared to Cayuse/HP/HC. Not as much depth/richness, but there is great acidity and the use of stems is clear. Faint ruby in the glass. Stemmy/green aromatics with herbs de Provence, black olive, Cayuse funk/iron on the nose. Saline, red and black berry driven on the palate with black pepper spice, truffle, beef jerky and big phenolics. Tart and acidic, I followed this over two days, and to my surprise, held up very well. Pop now.

  • Balanced, good fruit and funk, wonderful nose and palate, still has some acidity and silky tannins, great with steak.

  • Decanted for 20 minutes to allow the funk to dissipate and the wine to open. The color was a medium purple. Notes of dark berries, earth and a touch of herbs on the nose. The medium bodied palate was heavy with dark fruits (blackberry and blueberry), some earth and black olive, with touches of spice and herbs. The acidity was a bit less than needed to balance and any tannins were integrated. However, after about two hours the individual flavors began to fade with the earthiness coming to the fore. I would suggest drinking sooner rather than later.

  • This wine is singing right now. Getting mint and some funk on the nose here but in a good way. The minty nose gives way to a seriously balanced wine. Acid meets salt and then long finish. In an ode to Grateful Dead this wine is not fading away.

  • Cellar Tracker claims this is past its prime (albeit only by a year). All I can say is that this lady ages mighty gracefully. It's a bit reserved, perhaps--younger No Girls has an obstreperous quality that even oxygen can't quite tame--so if the funk is not your bag you might consider dipping into the library. The funk is certainly THERE but it's a mineral, chocolate funk (ya know...George Clinton!) rather than a vegetal or umami one. And it's more of an aura than a central feature--like black crackled carbon around a toasted marshmallow. The fruit is also far less shy here than with later vintages I've had; bursts of tart cherry and plum are apparent almost immediately, contributing to a beautifully rounded, juicy mouthfeel with plenty of spice and leather. It showed its age most of all in the finish, I think; the usual bracing tail was replaced with a muted wet stone flavor with maybe a few crushed herbs thrown in for good measure. I don't know how much longer this could go, but at ~12 years it made for quite the sophisticated treat.
