Lockdown Italian dinner. An Elvio Cogni wine seemed appropriate. Browning at the edges was an unwelcome sign.. Aging asymetrically. Alcohol too much upfront. Still retains complexity and supple black fruit flavours with intense tobacco afternotes. Tannins have faded and the wine is slightly past peak. An hour later the wine was still evolving. In retrospect, should have given the wine a bit more respect by decanting it. Would I buy again? At USD$43....Absolutely!! But I would have opened it a year earlier :-(

Very light, translucent ruby red. Floral nose. Red fruits, dried orange and cranberry. Elegant and well balanced, and still improving with age. Not extracted despite 14.5 abv.

Italian Wine Scholar Class at the Texas Wine School. This Barbaresco from a MGA vineyard near Neive is delicious. Medium ruby, with garnet hues. The nose is clean, with ripe red fruit, dried red flowers, tobacco and just a touch of neutral oak. The palate is dry, with plenty of fruit, medium acidity, medium tannins and medium (+) to high alcohol (14.5%). Medium (+) flavor intensity and length. It is drinkable now but will benefit greatly from a decant or from a few more years of cellaring.

The 2011 Bordini was closed at first, yet it opened to reveal an intense mix of crushed black cherry and sweet florals. On the palate, I found a vibrant expression of spice and cherry with a slight herbal twang. It finished long and almost juicy, as intense red berry was cleansed from the senses by brisk acidity. This was structured and intense but really quite fun to drink.
