  • A gift of a dinner for Joao's 40th (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): The wine is a bit of a more expressive nose away from perfection. Opened and left to rest for a good hour ( a mistake we made last time 6m ago when we rated it 95)
The nose is of dark fruits, light nose not a singing one. Ironically the first time we tried this wine 8 yrs ago (Papies 95) the nose was the wow factor of it. But the palate does make up for it. Well assimilated oak, prob a touch on the heavy side of the oak use spectrum, rich, full of energy an so vibrant. Silky on the edges, good tannin and structure and just such a joyful mouthfeel. Solid 96-96 wine and with a lot of life ahead of it. Gladly we have 4 more :)!

  • 7 years since we tried this last (Papies 95) and still this wine is so fresh and youthful. The nose is a class act much like 7 years ago, exceptional, bright and quite on the dark fruited side. On the palate it is still young and would suggest some decanting tbh. We can go on and on here but in short, amazing nose still youth full and needs evolution palate. 95 again but this with time will be much higher.

  • Magnum - For a grand cru, and especially Musigny, this is not a great showing. It was a perfectly sound wine but at 10 years old it should be showing more verve and sophistication. It has fine ripe fruit with a moderate amount of spiciness but it lacks the complexity you look for in a Musigny. Hopefully the remainder will be better.

  • Joao introduces the Dark Side with 2001 Grand Crus (Chez Rosa-Teixeira, London): Joao introduces the Dark Side with 2001 Grand Crus, London June 5th 2010
(side by side Louis Remy Chambertin, A-F Gros Richebrourg & Vougeraie Musigny)

Our first musigny and one to remember ( label reads 605 bottles made in 2001). Gildine who tried it first commented " Le Nez extraordinaire" and indeed this goes a long way to describe this wine. Probably the best nose on a wine we have ever come across. Big and complex you can spend half an hour just smelling this wine.
On the palate is less so as it feels young still and needs time to evolve a body that will match the nose. Dnt need to say much more. Shame these beauties cost so much.. Thank you Joao for the honor.

(Vougeraie Musigny) Believe it or not, the entire harvest from this vineyard was de-stemmed grape by grape, entirely by hand. This process took 10 people 12 hours to complete resulting in 2 and a quarter barrels. Medium-plus cherry in colour. The nose is deep with an aroma that’s quite persistent. Very silky almost soft palate, despite the evident concentration. Very smooth, well covered acidity. The finish is exceptionally long – as you would expect with an exceptional wine!
