Commanderie de Bordeaux dinner. I brought this as a pirate to the table to share among the 05's. Consistent with my last tasting note, it really delivered. Medium ruby with garnet rim. Expressive nose of cedar, cassis, toast and minerals, very complex, classic Medoc with animalic notes. On the palate this wine is medium bodied and elegant, no traces of the 2003 heat. Silky tannins and freshness, it's all there. A real surprise, simply outstanding. Together with the Margaux 2003 to me the best wine of this "more miss than hit" vintage.
This is one of those honey, it's not you, it's me wines. Meaning, I do not always find the greatness in the bottles I've had. Almost for sure, the intense ripeness of the vintage causes bottle variation. At least that's my theory and I'm sticking to it. I've had that same sensation with other 2003 Bordeaux wines as well. On to this bottle, it had it all. It was rich, silky, polished, complex, aromatic, long and deep. OK, it was advanced for its age in color and maturity, but it was truly a stunner!
It took quite some time for the 2003 Lafite to open up. But lord, how beautiful and classy this is! Deep, soft, complex bouquet filled with dark cherries, flowers, graphite, earth, ridiculously captivating. Palate is wonderfully balanced, almost flawless, elegant mouth feel with silky texture, extremely fine tannins and good amount of acidity. Many 2003 wines are not for the long haul, but this one is exception, and it will please drinkers for many many years. What a beauty!
