  • Private tasting at Rob's and his bottle. Popped with 15 minute decant, drank over 1 hour. Cork was very soft/stained/soaked up to the last 1/8". Previous experience with very old wines has not been good. Usally corked/oxidized and often awful, include some top shelf clarets, so had little hope. Was shocked to see the juice was clear and deep/dark purple in color with no hint of bricking or brown edge. Initially had that usual "old wine" funk/earthy-corkiness which blew off completely and quickly. Then stunned to find noting but a wonderful clean, Cab essence. I practically fell out of my chair and had to work to regain my composure before taking the first sip. What a delight, the wine had aged beutifully and perfectly with absolutely "nothing off" whatsoever. Good and proper fruit, oustanding integration/balance, smooth with a long finish of soft tannins. Without a doubt, the BEST "old" wine I've ever had. If tasted blind, I would have guessed this to be 7 years old. Probably would cellar 5 more years but I would not take the chance. What a treat and a lesson learned - don't pass judgement until you pull the cork. Once in a while, you may get lucky.
