2012 Lodi Native Zinfandel Tasting (Fine Wines of Stockton): Medium dark color with a ripe Zinfandel nose. In the mouth the heat is mildly present but there is also balanced acid and spicy sweetness with a mild finishing coarseness. The protocol for this wine did not allow for fining. Overall a very nice wine.

The New Wave of Lodi Zin in breaking here, offering an ongoing redefinition of that venerable grape. Decanted 1 hr. ahead. Pretty ruby color. Nice nose of herbs, black pepper, cherry. Pleasant and even elegant on the palate, neither soft nor tart, and definitely medium-bodied. Delicious too, with flavors of rhubarb and pomegranate, things you don't often find in Lodi Zin. But this is a Lodi Native. Finishes quickly with cherry notes, very light grip and a light dusting of tannins. This wine and others like it now emerging from Lodi are challenging the traditional parameters of Zinfandel. This one is completely delicious.

Dark ruby colored. Black cherries, some smoke, bright red plums, dusty earth, pencil shavings and chestnuts. Juicy plum and black cherry fruit, I’m surprised and pleased by the pleasant acid and fine tannins. One of the earthier wines in the mix, with campfire soot, loam, tree bark and fallen leaves. Bold but showing restraint. Deep iron, rocks, and charcoal notes, some sweet lavender and violets. A bit heavier in body (14.6%) than some of the other wines, but still very pretty. Long, fresh finish of white pepper and floral perfume. Winemaker Michael McCay, Grower Keith Watts.

Lodi Native Tasting: Medium ruby color with pleasing blackberry, plum, bramble and spice aromas. On the palate, it's medium bodied with medium+ acidity, dusty tannins and ample ripe blackberry, plum, and spice flavors with a hint of black currant on the back end. Medium-long inish. 14.5% alcohol.
