  • Plastic capsule with revolting viscous brown gunk atop an otherwise sound cork, offset by top shoulder wine level. On opening, unpromising very pale brown rose, moldy fruit nose, and suspect palate. Seriously decanted and aired for a couple hours, the color has deepened and cleared. Light nose of dry tart red fruit, the palate is also light with flavors of soft cranberry, leather, and sweat. The finish is tart and barely tannic, relatively clipped. I don't drink enough nero d'avola to know but presumably the variety is submerged by extreme age. This will probably never be my favorite type of wine, but like so many older Italian wines, with enough air it finally did come around and become an enjoyable drink, as well fascinating experience. Enjoyed with flatiron steak stir fry.
