  • Somewhat translucent, deep and pretty dark ruby red color. A bit closed and restrained nose with sweet aromas of dried figs, overripe cherries, some strawberry-driven fruit and a rather noticeable streak of alcohol. The wine is sweet, full-bodied and very spicy on the palate with quite robust and even moderately bitter feel to it. There are intense and rich flavors of overripe plums, even some pruney fruit, a little bit of dried dates, a hint of peppery spice and a touch of strawberry jam. Overall the wine comes across as nicely structured with its moderate acidity and rather firm and grippy tannins. The finish is quite spicy and bitter with some alcohol warmth and sweet, medium-long flavors of peppery spice, plum juice, some poached figs, a little bit of strawberry jam and a hint of dried dates.

A surprisingly spicy, bitter and serious Banyuls which feels surprisingly angular and structure-driven at this point. Overall this is pretty darn tasty, but pairing it now will need some planning, because the tannic grip might clash with some desserts and the bitterness might overwhelm others. I'd let the wine age and calm down a little in a cellar before opening a bottle. Great value at 14,90€ for a half-liter bottle.
