This wine was tasted in double-blind fashion at Vintage Wines, Ltd. The bottle was kindly provided by Ken Johnson. The robe is opaque garnet and the moderately intense nose shows aromas of dried cranberries, plums, earth and cigar box. Full-bodied on the palate, with medium (to even high) acidity, medium sweet tannins and well-integrated alcohol (listed as 14.2%). The flavors are in line with the nose and the medium-length finish is smooth. As is the case with most older Zins, this one comes off more as an older Cabernet Sauvignon. The acidity in this particular wine is also surprising. Drink now-12/14.
I was very suprised that this was still so good. The color was deep and dark, the nose was a bit dirt and spice, but clearly softened over time. Very clean in the mouth. Bit of leather, with a hint of clove, that was actually pleasant. Clean finish. This is why I love this wine year after year. Sub 90 only because it's lost a bit of it's edge over time.
