Slightly past fully mature, the wine showed a distinct herbal edge to the peppery, red, earthy fruits. This is not a bad wine, but it's not my favorite vintage for Guigal.

Food: French @ Darcy & Liz Hong Kong Duration: 5 hours Condition: Perfect Aroma: Rose, mud, spices Notes: this old La Landonne has an amazing nose of rose and spices, and the complexity on the palate demonstrates exactly what a good Cote Rotie should be like. A very seductive nose with deep and well structured aftertaste. Definitely not bad for a weak year, but comparing to another weak year such as 1984 I have to say I probably enjoyed the 1984 better. This wine I believe is currently a little past its peak drinking time window so I would suggest to drink it within the next 5 years.

In my cellar since release...decanted around 5 pm and drunk between 6 and 8 pm. Fantastic 34 year old wine that looks like 10...dark garnet, little bricking. Nose has lots of pepper, other spices, smoke, cherry and earth. Very soft, velvety mouth feel. Favors are rich and distinct black cherry, pepper, licorice, plum, earth and a strong, long lasting shiitake mushroom on the finish which lasts a solid minute. Just fantastic.

Magnums for Dave (Jean-Georges - New York, NY): From magnum. Dark fruit with some good meaty spice on the nose. Still quite primary for its age with good density and power. But this didn't show much complexity near the end, and only had a moderate length.

Tired. After a while it nursed its way back to offer us a comely wine at its core: smokey bacon and truffles.
