Some combination of mood, weather, environment - who knows - there are days when a wine is truly singing. Fortunate to have such a day here. Peerless example of Vacqueryas. Everything in harmony. Fantastic fruit, flavours of raspberry, blackberry, other autumnal tones. Balancing acidity, tannins well integrated and gorgeous length. All that whilst still remaining fresh. More ? Don’t mind if I do.

As with his whites, the 2012 Red is a brilliant success. Complex and rich without being overly dominated by stewed fruit. Dark rich red colour, changes in the glass from a syrah-dominated almost smoky opening, reminiscent to me of a fine St Joseph through, to a more red/black berry flavour typically grenache wine with plenty of garrigue. Long & complex, the wood is very subtle and well integrated. Splendid.

Having retested the 2011 recently i must admit that I fear that it will never come together and only merits a low/mid 80s score. This 2012 however is a beauty. The nose is divine, compact, creamy, fresh! Not focused on the fruit, but the fruit is there, cassis raspberries, cranberries. Any type of berries it is in there. Jokes and exaggeration aside. this is a beautiful impressive wine and the winemaker Eric Bouletin is splendid, humble and always in the vineyard. His whites are hands down the best Q/P in the entire area and this red is as well. I tasted his rosé (very small cuvée) a couple of days ago. it blew me off my socks.

Here the wine has absorbed the barrique, not so for the 2011. Still quite massive. Great style. This is likely to turn out an impressive and complex wine and one of the best examples of what vacqueyras is capable of. Firmer than monardiere, more masculine but no heat or overripeness buy with confidence
