Community Tasting Notes (average 92.6 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 83 notes)

Tasted by Haltermr on 12/25/2009 & rated 92 points: Really opened up after about 2 hours. Layers of deep blackberries and black cherries, along with oak spices. Not overly complex, but great depth and purity of fruit. Palate was superb, echoing the blacberry notes and moving into a long finish, with no traces of heat. No real secondary characteristics evident at this point. Still plenty young. (418 views)
Tasted by tkoby11 on 12/24/2009 & rated 94 points: Color: Perfectly Burgundy red, purple-red core, red edges

Nose: Forest floor, camphor, black cherry, cinnamon spice.

Palate: Full, yet supple black and red fruits: Blackberry, cherry liquor. On the bigger side, but not palate exhausting. Great wine! (405 views)

Tasted by markelln@bellsouth.net on 11/7/2009 & rated 94 points: Decanted for 1/2 hr in am, and again for an hour before traveling to Michael's Genuine. My 1st Ten. Exceptional now, promises to only get better. = to the outstanding 06 Morlet we had recently. Balanced opulent PN with good but a little reticent bouquet, great tactile sense, and extended finish. Wines such as these outclass most Burgundies, and Oregonian PN's. (1003 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 10/17/2009 & rated 91 points: Sacred Cow is released into the wild (Restaurant X, Oklahoma, OK): WIML91?

Tasted October 17, 2009 at an offline.

Decanted 5 hours. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Slightly big nose which I guess is to be expected with this young CA Pinot showing notes of plums, currants, black cherries, black berries and a bit of white pepper. Rich flavors of black berries, plums and black cherries. Medium acidity, firm tannins, full bodied. Drink now with plenty of air or continue to hold over the medium term. (1108 views)
Tasted by profiler54 on 10/10/2009 & rated 95 points: Big brooding and dense.. Excellent fruit forwardness, very herbaceous with lavendar, dark cherries and bacon notes. nice long complex finish
Really enjoyed this wine ...Very Santa Barbara .... (1072 views)
Tasted by brianngibson on 10/4/2009 & rated 93 points: Crimson in the glass. Dark cherry on the nose. Cherry, blueberry, and a hint of strawberry fruit on the palate. Big fruit flavors, and very low acidity in its style. A pleasant mid-length finish with tannins softened by 5 years of age. (1179 views)
Tasted by Michaels_Place on 10/4/2009 & rated 90 points: We did a vertical of 03, 04 and 05 Sea Smoke Pinots and added a few others, such as an 07 Shea Vinyard Pinot and an 05 Kosta Browne Pinot. Our reviews were as follows:

2003 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Ten - 88
2004 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Ten - 90
2005 Sea Smoke Pinot Botella - 91
2006 Auteur Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard - 93
2005 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley - 94/95

The 03 Sea Smoke was on its way down and disappointing. The 04 Sea Smoke Ten was good and more of what you would expect from a Sea Smoke Ten, but the 05 Botella was the sleeper and pleasantly surprised us all. Over all, we scored the Bottella higher (91 points) then its more expensive brothers. The Kosta Brown took second place at 93 points and The Shea Auteur wiped them all out with a strong 94-95 finish. And still remains my favorite! (1155 views)
Tasted by arniec on 9/23/2009 & rated 92 points: Could use a little more aging (1320 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 9/20/2009: Drinking beautifully but still young. (1311 views)
Tasted by Squirreljam on 9/9/2009: Somewhat disappointed in this wine; I thought after roughly 5 years from vintage, it should at least have settled into something that would show well, even if still too young to have evolved. For me, the nose was too straightforward, none of the 'magic in a glass' that PN can deliver. It certainly was expressively rich, but also had some perceptable heat at the end. Palate-wise, again rich and long with hint of wood, but monolithic, not showing the layers that I like in PN or burg. (1405 views)
Tasted by kgh on 8/21/2009 & rated 94 points: A big, dense ripe Pinot with red berry and spice flavors. Benefitted from decanting 2 hours. (1395 views)
Tasted by pinkfloyd on 8/2/2009 & rated 94 points: (1157 views)
Tasted by Ki Punwar on 8/1/2009: A big styled California Pinot that really improved with some aeration. Very Nice, notes of spice and cinnamon. Can really stand up to food like duck (1499 views)
Tasted by phlin on 6/19/2009 & rated 93 points: I took a small taste upon opening and it seemed hot and out of balance. But then about 3 hours later, the wine transformed into a gorgeous and hedonistic beauty. Notes of black raspberries, black cherries, baking spices, and just a hint of mocha. Creamy texture. If you are a fan of this style of California Pinot, then you should love this wine. 93-94 points. (1685 views)

Tasted by pepeelvis on 4/6/2009: big cali pinot. there was a small amount of taint noticeable in my bottle, but could still tell how impressive this wine is. (2231 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 4/3/2009 flawed bottle: Not sure on this wine. This was the first Ten I've had, but it displays very lean, bitter characteristics on palate. The nose also has strange qualities that appear to be signs of TCA, but it is subtle. Based on my past experience with all the other Sea Smoke Pinots, and all the previous reviews of this wine, this bottle is not representative. Damn shame! (2189 views)
Tasted by HKTraveler on 3/24/2009 & rated 92 points: Not as good first day but second day was fantastic. Strong cherry nose and taste. Cola? slightly hot. Enjoyable overall (2412 views)
Tasted by Hollowleg on 3/20/2009 & rated 93 points: Let sit for 30 minutes in the bottle. Paired very well with homemade goat cheese, pesto & tomato pizza & provolone pesto & roma tomato cheese pizza.
Big, intense concentrated flavors. Atypical for a pinot, nicely balanced, full bodied & long finish.
The Southing is just as good, however, this is definitely a different tasting experience. (2435 views)
Tasted by 2loyal on 3/15/2009 & rated 92 points: Wonderfully complex and silky pinot noir, to which I should have paid closer attention in when I tasted my last bottle last year. More nuanced than I anticipated, so I was glad that I had a chance to focus more on what was in my glass this time. Still not the same QPR as the Botella, but a great wine drink with friends who really appreciate good New World PN. (2571 views)
Tasted by teefbee on 3/15/2009 & rated 91 points: A very pleasant pinot, but certainly not spectacular. It was very smooth with subtle flavors. It didn't seem any better, though, than the Southing I've been drinking. We enjoyed this during a birthday dinner at Dan Tana's. (2435 views)

Producer website.
At Sea Smoke we believe that the vineyard is the wine. For this reason, we produce Pinot Noir grown exclusively on our estate vineyard in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA in Santa Barbara County, California. We focus on the meticulous management of each vine to achieve ideal vine balance and very low yields, while incorporating sustainable, environmentally sound farming practices. Each of our ten clones of Pinot Noir is hand harvested, and individual vineyard block/clone combinations are kept in separate lots throughout the winemaking process, enabling us to develop an intimate knowledge of the way Sea Smoke vineyard expresses itself. These individual lots form the basis of a complex flavor palette from which final blending decisions are made. This results in wines of exceptional complexity and grace - each one, we believe, a reflection of the unique terroir of our estate vineyard. We hope you agree, and we welcome your comments.

About red wine
Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
