  • A single vineyard Barbera, macerated with the skins for 6-8 days, aged in barriques (60% new) for 18 months. Annual production 14,000 bottles.

Somewhat translucent, very dark cherry color with ruby red rims. Ripe, rather sweet and very fruit-forward nose with rich, concentrated aromas of cherry marmalade, violets, some sour cherries and a little smoky toast, imparting a slightly tar-like nuance to the nose, giving it an almost Nebbiolo-like air. Full-bodied, opulent and rich palate with ripe, concentrated flavors of cherry marmelade, sweet plummy fruit, raspberry juice, some sweet oak spice and a hint of blueberry jam. The wine comes across as pretty soft, thanks to its somewhat moderate acidity that seems rather soft and mellow - mainly due to the concentrated fruit - and rather light tannins typical of the variety. Also the alcohol seems a bit high with some heat on the palate. The finish is long, warm and opulent with rich flavors of sweet red cherry, plummy and almost pruney fruit, some sweet oak spice, a little sour cherry and a hint of dark chocolate bitterness.

Whereas the regular Matteo Correggia Barbera d'Alba was a nice, straightforward Barbera, this seems like a similar wine but made in style that appeals to the people who don't enjoy Italian wines but instead bold Napa Cabs or Aussie Shirazes. Though not a big and bold wine per se (almost impossible a feat for Barbera!), this wine seems rather heavy and ponderous after the regular Correggia Barbera. This wine is stylistically too soft and sweet for me, though it is not the worst example of the style - there is some sense of structure and balance underneath all that ripe fruit. I just prefer structure and balance over the fruit. At 19€ the wine seems overpriced, though nothing outside the normal pricing of these super-Barberas.
