Served along side with a 1982 Calon-Segur and a 1993 Opus One, this was the boldest and brightest of the bunch. Dark royal purple, predominately merlot, and of the three clearly the youngest. As a result was generally the least perfered of the three. Double decanted, and open 5 hours before first taste. Needed another five; much better later and into the following day. Bright tannins, intense and rough around the edges, showing rich black candy fruit and a long finish. Best days still in the future.
This right bank Bordeaux is dominated by Merlot (85%) and a lesser amount of Cabernet Franc (15%). After 9-1/2 years this bottle has matured nicely with plenty of blueberry fruit and dark chocolate flavors. Very subtle and well integrated tannins. Good strong finish with overtures of vanilla and chocolate. This is the way Merlot is done best as ONLY the French have perfected!
