  • TN: Burgundy vs. U.S Pinot Noir blind tasting....plus a dozen others!!! (Buzzini House): What a HUGE surprise! I thought this was no doubt the '99 Ridge MB...but it turned out to be this wine. Very light, green tinge color, young looking. Fresh melon, tropical fruit....reminded me of a NZ Sauvignon Blanc with some age on it. Gorgeous dried citrus spice, minerals, exotic spice...the fruit was even a little sweet. This wine is 18 years old???? WOW!

  • Notes from May 12, 2004 : ".Medium straw yellow colour; bouquet is very full, penetrating - throws up aromas of spices, minerals, and a spray of honey, along with some tangerine rind; the bouquet kept opening further with time, and remained intense ; full bodied and richly textured on the palate; flavours harmonised with the wine's acidity in the same way that a top Meursault delivers; spicy pineapple edge to the sweet citrus character, with the acid spine knitting everything together; no dominating oak influence, which can impact some California Chardonnays given time; a very long, lingering aftertaste coating the mouth with the fruit flavours, which stays present, seemingly for several minutes."

Added June 24, 2004 :I don't believe I could expand on that note - it seems consistent with what we experienced tonight. The spices bordered on sweet clove, which might be the only change I'd make on the bouquet. As the wine evolved in the glass, the bouquet became more intense, and the flavours more focused and persistent on the palate. Absolutely remarkable. The wine partnered the salmon extremely well. It was prepared to perfection, and the glaze held the moisture in the salmon. Both Lorraine and I felt that the dish could have been accompanied by a red Burgundy, and the next time that is exactly what we'll choose.

It's almost unbelievable that this wine is showing such freshness after 12+ years. It might be interesting to drop this wine into a tasting of French Burgundies some time. Only have a couple of bottles of the '91 remaining, but do have some '93 Cuvee LD to follow up.
