Cork. 13.5% alc. Decanted 1 hour. There’s a whisk of blue and black berry fruit left, and supported so well with fine, long tannins. Earthy complexities abound.

Started with plenty of acid and tannins with very little fruit, but we were rewarded by the patience of dinner pace in Montalcino. The warm, dark cherry came out after an hour in the decanter and carried through our entrees of duck breast and wild boar and remained lovely with our chocolate based desserts. A lovely wine indeed.

I can't tell if this is past its best, as some others are saying, or not there yet. It is true that it doesn't have much freshness of fruit left; what's here is earthy and autumnal. However, there is still plenty of structure here, so much that it needed an hour in the decanter to hit its stride, at which point it was very well-put-together and classy (although not nearly as classy as the '97 Riserva). This may get better over the years if the gritty tannin melts into the wine more, so long as the palate doesn't turn stale (which is what happened to the '95 Riserva).

I think this may have been past its prime, but I think I was dealing with a bit of cork taint at the same time. Disappointing for sure.
