  • Not at all a bad wine for a Tuesday night. I've bought this in another lot when it was DCV appellated because I suspected it might be Unti's Petit Frere, but this time I am guessing this is simply a negociant's blend of lots from here and there in Sonoma County, which covers a lot of ground. Grenache sources could include Bennett Valley, the aforementioned Unti in DCV, Sonoma Valley, Occidental; Syrah could come from an even wider area. Glugging wine. Not a wine with which you should expect an enlightening dialogue.

  • Dark ruby red, nearly opaque, going to pink at the edge, medium viscosity. Nose of blackberry, vanilla, cassis, cream, white pepper, meat; flavors of dark cherry, strawberry, and leather on the front end; white pepper, olive, meat emerge after a bit. This wine presents best initially, and then starts giving out as you get to know it, before falling apart a little in the mid-palate. Something like a person who seems thrilling in an initial conversation, but who gets less interesting as the evening wears on. Certainly not profound, and somewhat new world for my taste, but serviceable enough for an ordinary Tuesday dinner.
