  • I've now owned these bottles for most of its life and somehow haven't had one for 15 years. It is definitely in a mature drinking window now though I can't tell whether the train has reached its destination or whether there's another stage where it picks up a little more funk and transparency. Right now what it offers is surprisingly black-complexioned fruit and a soft but very clear scent evoking a turned-soil earthiness that's more on the rocky than funky side of things. Tannins and acids are pretty much resolved at this point so it's lean and slick but I am still impressed by its sturdiness - I was expecting a red fruited autumnal thing with diminished color intensity but this is the opposite, deeper in tone than it ever was and with a constitution that only emboldens everything as it sits in the decanter.

  • Bought a case and a half of this on closeout five years ago for fifteen bucks a bottle. About two years ago I noticed it starting to shut down, becoming leaner and harsher. Now it's turned a corner. There's a soft but expressive earthy bouquet. The fruit is still fresh, with flavors of apples and berries. Acid is very prominent and will probably stay a bit piercing until some of the remaining tannin softens.
