  • Side by side w Pierre Cellier’s rose’ - aromatically pinched with a bitter grapefruit note that appears early and stays late on palate

  • Fine and pretty mousse, it dissipates quickly but keeps coming for a long time.
Smells much closer to home than the Schramsberg :) I am probably fooling myself but I get the chalky character. Definitely some flinty or saline character. There are limes, lemons, agave, cucumber. Toastiness is not very pronounced, maybe just a little.
On the palate, it’s more bitter and with just a slightest tannin. Lemon and lemon zest, kumquat, apple cider.
I like this quite a lot.

  • (July 2022 disgorgement)

Golden color, boozy fruit on the nose. I taste ripe apples and some brioche in the background. Not much acidity or tension; this is simple and savory but not at all flabby. Enjoyable and a great value at the $35 I paid (which is a heavy discount relative to retail). Not my go-to style for champagne but this round, heavy handed style would be a good fit for a party.

  • Retail $60. 40% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, 20% Meunier, 5% Arbanne, Petit Meslier, and Fromenteau. Disgorged July, 2023. Paid $45 at H-E-B. This has long been a favorite of mine not just for the quality but also for the fact that it includes three of the four "other" grapes allowed in Champagne but no one ever uses (the fourth, I believe, is Pinot Blanc). Tart pear with a hint of lemon rind on the nose, along with yeasty croissant and a slight mineral aspect. Whoa. The palate is pretty fantastic with plenty of green pear, Granny Smith apple, a distinct salinity, and an artful acidity. For around forty-five bucks? Yeah, this should be a staple of any champagne stable. 92 Points.

  • -- popped and poured --
    -- tasted non-blind over a couple hours --
-- 30% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Meunier, 35% Pinot Noir, and 5% mix of Arbanne, Petit Meslier & Fromenteau --
    -- dosage: 6 g/L, according to producer's website --

NOSE: light aromatics that reflect the palate.

BODY: rose gold color; medium-light bodied.

TASTE: quite dry, with a relatively airy mouthfeel, but without compromising in the flavor department; medium-light pear and apple mix; a touch vinous; hint of chalkiness; more green pears than apples; not terribly complex, but a QPR champion at $35.

(NV L. Aubry Brut) ($45.00) Have you noticed how good this wine has gotten the last few years? I’ve been drinking bottles at home, and my lips be smackin’. For all their “exotic” wines, this is right down the middle, though far more buzzy and crisp than commercial Champagne-like-substances. This one’s 60% ’08 and 40% last year’s blend; 50%PM/25%CH/25%PN, disgorged 2/11, and true to its modern form, incisive and crackery, rye rusks and oysters – which in fact this wine partners quite well!
