  • I served this wine with a 1988 Jobard Mersault Pourzot. I decanted both wines in advance. From the onset this wine was beautiful. Stone fruit, mineral, must, mushroom and at it's core there was honeysuckle flavor. 86 was a botrytis year and I believe this honeysuckle flavor was due to botrytis. The wine opened up over about 3 hours and was really quite nice.
The 1988 Pourzot started off with a little sharp flavor in the beginning. At the beginning I thought the 86 was going to be the superior wine. The 88 slowly bloomed and after about 4 hours was really first rate with a beautiful balance and linear focus. Flavors of flint, wet stone, mineral, mushroom, must and a host of other flavors came through. At the beginning I would have given this wine about a 90 but after it fully opened a 95. Amazing what we are missing when we don't have the ability to revisit a wine over a several hour period of time. Unfortunately this is t the norm at most wine tastings.

  • Unlike the below note, the cork looked like it was out of a 5 year old bottle. Started out rather neutral, but with a little air, the nose was redolent of peppermint, perfumed flowers, dried honey and minerals. Generous but lithe on the palate with notes echoing the nose plus ripe dried yellow and green pears. Perfectly integrated acid and minerality on the long finish.

  • Terrible. The cork broke and the pressure from the bottle pushed the remaining cork down into the bottle so fast it splashed up everywhere! Never seen that before. The nose was the worst of the bunch. Absolutely putrid aroma of spoiled everything. Really terrible. Didn't even taste it - impossible.
