  • The fruit is a bit cooked (too hot) for my preference and I’d also like a little more acid for freshness, especially from Santa Maria Valley (maybe I should have opened it earlier?), but this is still very good. Rich plum, strawberry, and raspberry fruit, but with a smoky undertone. Tart cranberries too. There’s hints of violet flowers, chocolate, Syrah-like umami/meatiness, spice bread, leather, tobacco, and wet autumn forest. These flavors are where this wine shines best. The oak is just right: subtle hints of vanilla and freshly cut wood, but not overbearing. Lots of minerality too and some sweet caramel on the finish along with a hint of cayenne pepper. I enjoyed this, but I had really high expectations and wanted to enjoy it more. I’d be curious to try a bottle of this in a cooler vintage. And in general, I would like to try more bottles from Paul Lato.

This drank well right from the first pour, but held up well throughout the course of the day. Good match with salmon, though I liked this even better with Solomonov’s Kale/Nut/Apple salad. The nuttiness, pomegranate seeds, bright sumac onions, and earthy kale were just the right thing. I also really liked this on its own.

  • Bright red, bing cherry and earth qualities on the nose. Medium bodied 14.2% ABV) with a mostly red cherry/red berry/general red fruit profile. Shows very good mid-body depth with nearly silky and elegant undertones. Balanced tannins on the backside, along with neatly contrasting tart red fruit notes that add to complexity and tie the mid-body into the finish. It was the balance between fruit and structure that made this wine so special to drink. The fruit felt well supported, but expressive and the wine is at peak and should be drunk over the next 2 years to enjoy this high point.

  • Delightful especially with a pork roast.

  • Not decanted and none needed. 10 years on still an intense wine. Nicely aged frame of leather and earth highlighting a ripe fruit of strawberry, raspberry and cherry confiture. Sweet notes of gingerbread and savory dimension round off the picture. Finely textured palate with impeccable balance. Still juicy and delicious, but you can feel the hot climate.

  • Once again played at the top level. Great warm perfume with rose petals, all types of red fruits, baking spices and soft leather. Very lively, layered and developing in the glass. On the palate it’s silky, welcoming and seductive with whole range of red fruit from soaked lingonberries and strawberry jelly to cherry marmalade, just a bit of vanilla and old world pipe tobacco. Acidity is just at balance.
At peak now. Lovely and memorable.
    Great job, Mr. Lato!
