Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 84 notes)

Tasted by BGStahnke on 6/27/2009 & rated 90 points: Faded magenta color in the glass. Slightly perfumed nose of red fruits and pencil lead. Sour cherries, coffee and some earth on the palate. Medium length finish with some bits of orange rind and more earth. (357 views)
Tasted by sbwino on 2/26/2009 & rated 91 points: Light to medium body with forest floor, and light red fruit flavors. (490 views)
Tasted by Lainie on 9/24/2008 & rated 82 points: volatile alcohol, cherry vanilla, 1D. Short finish, balanced acidity, 1D. (495 views)
Tasted by jasonh on 9/3/2008: For me this was the most harmonious wine of the evening. Nice purity of fruit but revealing little bits of secondary elements. I would hold this for a few more years although it is in a very nice place right now. Not the most complex wine but it has what I am usually looking for. Great texture and acid so it works right in with food but also a strong presence of fruit so it could be sipped outside on a warm evening. The wine is a bowl of lightly spiced red cherries.  Tasted by markjahnke on 7/22/2008 & rated 93 points: NJ Pinot Noir Tasting - June 21st OFFLINE - took place on July 22nd (New Jersey): Awesome treat to have another LC, and we love what Tom is doing out there! Open for 2 hours, with a nose of cherry, blueberry, and spice. Lots of rapberry and cherry jam in the mouth, this wine is absolutely singing! Not sure this wine will get any better, but if I had any, I'd have a hard time not popping them. Fabulous! Thanks TwoSleeves! (704 views)
Tasted by spacewrangler on 7/14/2008 & rated 89 points: Still drinking very nicely, with pleasing spices and a confectionary note. (651 views)
Tasted by Haggis on 7/12/2008 & rated 92 points: This is a killer Oregon pinot. I have had Tom Mortimer's wines many times during the past 4 yrs or so and have always been impressed. The 2002 is drinking exceedingly well now and should remain at/near peak for another 2-4 yrs...maybe longer. Decanted for about one hour. Blueberry, cherry, spice, and a bit of burgundian funk. Delicious. (683 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 5/19/2008 & rated 93 points: As delicious as the last bottle! Went great with the tasty red snapper! (770 views)
Tasted by ChillyWino on 4/25/2008 & rated 92 points: In a great place right now. Popped, poured and enjoyed over a long dinner. Sorry to say it's my last bottle. (938 views)
Tasted by Mattshank on 2/17/2008 & rated 89 points: Pinot Wine Dinner (Edina Country Club, MN): Nose: Pretty feminine nose of flowers. Palate: Soft, very accessible wine. My least favorite of the night and still a very nice bottle. A little too subtle for my taste but well made. (1026 views)
Tasted by spts1000 on 1/21/2008 & rated 89 points: a very good wine. it is a nice example of a feminine american pinot. light berries and decent length. still had some structure. it just did not have the WOW for me to score it higher.a nice bottle. (1053 views)
Tasted by Dave Mci on 12/23/2007 & rated 94 points: (812 views)
Tasted by Haggis on 12/8/2007 & rated 87 points: I'm in the minority camp on this one. I've had this (and other vintages) of Le Cadeau on numerous occasions (and bought quite a few) and, though I agree that it is a well-made wine, it lacks character in my opinion. The fruity nose of cherry, strawberry, rhubarb, and red currant are largely confirmed on the palate. Furthermore, I find Le Cadeau to be quite thin and almost watery. This characteristic is, I presume, what some call "stylish" or "elegant." Just not my style, I guess. I much prefer Martinelli for New World pinot. Tasmanian pinots are the way to go, if you want non-French and if you can find them. (1173 views)
Tasted by keeno1 on 11/23/2007 & rated 92 points: Beautiful nose of raspberry, cherry and hints of nutmeg. Wine has a silky mouthfeel and wonderful flavors of crushed red berries, bing cherry, spice and a touch of mineral. Medium-long finish. Very pretty wine that is drinking nicely. This was my first experience with the 2002 and I was very impressed. (1204 views)
Tasted by otisabdul on 11/15/2007 & rated 90 points: A little more jammy than I recall in the past, but smoothed out with some air. Great nose. (1306 views)
Tasted by PinotFan on 9/9/2007: Might this be on the decline, or perhaps a bad bottle? The last two I had were absolutely SINGING, and I have read others on the boards proclaiming the same. What I remembered was silky texture and a great food wine. This did open a bit late in the evening, after the delicious roasted herb chicken I had it paired with, but as a pop and pour, it confused me. Notes of red fruit, cherry, cola and a bit of spice to me, but not much more. I've got 1 more bottle and now I don't know if I should open it, or let it sit. Either way, I will give it at least a half hour decant next time. (1355 views)
Tasted by solarman on 7/19/2007 & rated 92 points: I opened this with a dinner of pesto-cream based pasta with sun-dried tomatoes. I hadn't tried the 2002 in a while (supposedly the best vintage in OR...maybe ever) and was pleasantly surprised. It was a beautiful, feminine wine and was drinking perfectly...before I knew it I was on my third glass! I am a fan of pinots that are not overdone and loved this wine. (1491 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 7/14/2007 & rated 93 points: As delicious as the last bottle! (1523 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 7/2/2007 & rated 93 points: Opened another bottle with mark & Linda on our anniversary at Hawkshead Inn in South Haven. Consistently fine wine. 93 points. (1883 views)
Tasted by GreenDrazi on 6/11/2007 & rated 92 points: No decant. Drinking superbly now. (1753 views)
Tasted by wineislife on 4/28/2007 & rated 85 points: Modest blueberry bouquet. Burgundian is style, decidely mundane in my view. Limited mid-palette with short finish. (1988 views)
Tasted by pgb67 on 4/15/2007 & rated 88 points: I wanted to buy the '03, which is getting high marks, but my shop convinced me to go with the 02 which they said was better (and in stock as it turns out). Didn't measure up to some Burgs I served next to it and I like the fruit better in other Oregon PNs. (1957 views)
Tasted by joelandbeth on 3/31/2007 & rated 82 points: Very pleasant on the nose, but underwhelming in the mouth. Very light and uninteresting. Fine if it had been a $10-$15 bottle (though even in that range I've had better). For the price, it lacked any sort of memorable qualities. (2020 views)
Tasted by PinotFan on 3/31/2007: Still going strong. A pop and pour beauty. Pairs well with food (salmon) as well. (2066 views)
Tasted by spacewrangler on 3/20/2007 & rated 92 points: See previous note, this is humming along very well. (2398 views)

Le Cadeau is a 28 acre property, of which 14 acres is planted, located near Newberg Oregon on the southern edge of Parrett Mountain. The vineyard is located on a basalt hillside and has been described as Oregon's rockiest vineyard. As a result of the rock the vines are slow growing and small. The vineyard is dedicated to Pinot Noir and is planted in several Dijon clones, a Pommard clone, and a Swiss clone Mariafeld. In 2002 and 2003 the vineyard produced a single cuvee. For 2004 and 2005 the vineyard released 3 cuvees. Cote Est is the cooler and more fertile east side. Rocheux is the rocky west side. Diversite, as the name implies, is from clones scattered through out the vineyard. A fourth cuvee, Equinoxe was added for the 2006 vintage. The Equinoxe cuvee is from the center of the vineayrd. Le Cadeau is a vineyard and not a winery. The wines are made by various vintners with each vinter having specific parcels to work with. There is no house style at Le Cadeau and each vintner is allowed to pursue their vision of Pinot Noir from the grapes they are provided. The vineyard is owned Tom and Deb Mortimer who purchased the property in 1996.

About red wine
Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.
