  • Dinner at Cafe de HK (Cafe de HK, Balestier Road): This took awhile to get going. It was a bit thin and weedy at first, as some poorer Amoureuses can be, but it grew in with time and air until it showed pretty nicely towards the end of the evening. By this point, this nose was nice and pretty. Barely a trace of 2004 green meanies here, just a bit of gravel, woody bramble and a minty shisho leaf vibe, and then a twist of Burg funk shading into sweeter aromas of dark cherries, dried flowers and spice. The palate was bright and lively, with really juicy acidity just falling on the right side of tart, and fine, silky tannins wrapped around high-toned flavours of black cherries, flowers and spice. It felt a bit skinny on the attack, but opened up and filled out with some quiet intensity on the midpalate, and then when it lingered nicely with a bit of fragrant spice and brambly herb at the rather short finish. I loved the flowery and elegance of it though. Not the greatest Amoureuses by a distance, but enjoyable and nicely representative of both its vintage and its terroir. Unfortunately faded away and got a but greener and more weedy after a few hours in the bottle though.
