  • Simply popped and poured, this big Burgundy was generously shared by brother LMC.

Red fruit, some sweetness on the back palate, M+ acidity with a long finish.

Is this a 20Y Barolo? Nope.. its a Côte de Nuits!

Truffles, prunes and an intensity that is somewhat fading. Perhaps a few years past its zenith. Nevertheless fun to try this!

Pre NY eve celebration with RN whom LMC had wanted to share this bottle with, his family M and M, LN and KS, Eng and A, myself and L, with WMK and H too. Happy New Year 2024!

  • We quickly identified this as a Pinot Noir, but is it an US or a French? Oregon or Burgundy?

Lively floral nose, hmm what is this? We had an interesting banter about the lack of "sous bois" or chicken droppings and poo in its nose, where this is actually a French term that refers to forest-floor or undergrowth notes with vegetative tones.

When revealed, we were rather surprised this was a 2004 Premier Cru, but I was grateful for this bottle which nearly met the criteria of "Of legal age". This just happens to be 2 years shy of 21 years old!

11th bottle of 11, and the last of an amazing flight in SKT's home, celebrating TC's visit and our ex-alumni of James Suckling Great Wines Tasting group from Bangkok Dec 2022.

    The vintage:
Burgundy 2004 is remembered as the season of thunderstorms and hail, which according to Jancis Robinson punctuated a miserable summer. There was significant hail damage on both 19th Jul and 23rd Aug, around Pommard and Volnay, Côte de Nuits and as far north as Chambolle Musigny.

With ripe grapes, I read that it is ever more likely that hail will split the skins, exposing the grapes to rot. This is of course not a universal disaster, as small hail spots may result in the grapes producing a resveratrol compound which is a defence mechanism, and this can even add richness to the wine!

    The wine maker:
Méo-Camuzet is a renowned estate in Burgundy today.

It was until 1988, when its land was leased out to other vignerons who share-cropped the land, with much of the wine being sold in bulk.

Jean-Nicolas Méo’s arrival at the domaine in 1989 changed the direction of the property, with more wines estate-bottled. In fact, as of 2007, everything has been kept by the domaine.

Méo-Camuzet has Grands Crus sites along with of some of the finest Premier Cru vineyards of Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne-Romanée.

Jean-Nicolas has also now established a négociant business – Méo-Camuzet Frère & Soeurs. They buy fruit from trusted growers across the Côte, whilst vineyard work is overseen by the team at Méo-Camuzet.

  • tasted a year ago. color still pale but nice ripe. nice substile nose of smoke, leather, herbs. still opening after couple of hours. acidity balanced out completely compared to a year ago. nice balance in drunk and relatively long. very nice compared to the other 2004 Meo's. will save the last bottle for another year.

  • Well, this is one of the first times on CT I disagree with almost every note. From popping the cork and having a nose that is quintessential Burgundy with smoke, blood, truffle, and more until the last glass, this is quintessential Burgundy and Chambolle with age on it. I do agree with the fact that it is young but it is drinking well and only needed 30 minutes to open but did evolve over dinner. Structured, balanced with a silky mouth feel. Integrated tannins and if there was a flaw it would be the somewhat short finish. Sorry nothing more since at dinner but this is a wine I'm glad I have 5 more to see it evolve.

  • Needs at least 4 hrs to breath. High acid to start with. Disappears. After which ripe burgandy. Still fuits left. Need to drink now, but still alive. Long pleasant after taste.
