  • Oh my, what a beautiful wine! Amazing nose of dark fruit, petrol, dried flowers. Nice mouthfeel. Finish good; but could be longer. Full tannins. Enjoyed at Wild Ginger with Erikk and Michelle.

  • Had the privilege of tasting this, thanks to Tim. The gorgeous nose of sweet milk chocolate and vanilla oak hits you and envelops you and the thick, gooey, milky shiraz coats your mouth, layers upon layers, with such intensity and elegance. It was indeed an orgasmic experience! Dense, chewy yet very refined, tannins singing in the mouth, such depth and complexity, and a very long finish. A hedonistic delight. Wine of the night for me! My wife felt that the Rusden Black Guts 2001 was comparable to this though.

  • Birthday Celebration 2014 (Extra Space): Generous contribution from Tim for my birthday. Popped and poured.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, dark ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with a lovely complex bouquet of chocolate oak, mocha coffee, summer flowers, and lots of dark fruits - blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberries, plums. Fruit-forwardness of an Aussie wine, but so controlled and totally not in-your-face. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), smooth textured medium+ tannins, full body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with flavours of chocolate oak, mocha coffee, blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberries, plums, mild spice. Long finish. Fruit is all there and very obvious, but somehow never seems to jump up at you. Very restrained - cool, calm, and collected.
Outstanding quality. Can drink now. Will continue to improve and hold for another 10+ years. Haha and James Halliday proclaims: "this wine would live forever."

  • A wonderful Grange on the way of moving from being an adolescent into a full grown bloke. The fruit is super soft and almost velevety with violets, raspberry, dark chocolate, tea, dried flowers and a lovely tone of smoked bacon and juicy roasted bacon fat. The nose is profoundly complex and sets expectations high. When tasting, all expectations are actually met. The different components of the palate all speak up with one voice. Integration is perfect and so is the balance. The acidity is there and matches the velvety, silky tannins in a very pleasant way. Still there is a lot of power and to this wine I would recommend heavier foods with balanced acidity. With a length on the finish that just goes on and on, I think this is one (if not the) best wine from Penfolds I have ever tasted. (score is 98+)

(Tasted in a flight with 1991 Guigal La Turque, 2001 Penfolds Grange, 2002 Torbreck RunRig and 2006 Alban Reva.)
