A private tasting and dinner at a friend's (Amsterdam): Impressively intense, very young, supremely classical and complete, tannins need a little more time to soften, balanced and concentrated, creamy and luscious even, sweet oak, almost piquant acidity, ripe fruit, avoids any back-end heat. Drinking well already, better in ten years and will last for decades.
Penfolds Grange & others (Extra Space): Aired in decanter for 1 hour before tasting. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purple colour. Legs. Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of vanilla, coconut, licorice, cinnamon, eucalyptus, cocoa, blueberries, blackberries all exuberantly showing and vying for attention. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol, very refined smooth medium+ tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of blueberries, blackberries, licorice, vanilla, cinnamon spice, coconut, cocoa. So many flavours. Extremely long finish. Outstanding quality. Unbridled in its intensity today. I preferred this the last time when it was more controlled. This exuberant showing is probably the effect of the air time in decanter. Drinking young now, this still needs another 10 years to show its best. But no doubt this is a really great wine, so nice to drink even now.
Penfolds Tasting with 5 vintages of Grange and a bunch more (Downtown Cleveland): This is huge but next to the Astralis is seems reasonable. Inky purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, black pepper, cedar and charred/gamey meats. Maybe some black olives too. Intense and concentrated. Drinking delicious now, but more about power and intensity. Tons fruit. Long finish. Needs a lot of time, but this exceeded my expectations as it is close to the 98.
