  • Sourced from three vineyards located within the Spring Mountain, Mt. Veeder and Yountville appellations, Napa Valley, CA: Opened and decanted, poured first glasses after about 45 minutes, consumed over the next 2 hours. Wine is beautiful in the glass with dark purple coloring at the center with pale ruby edges just starting to show some age. Starting with the second glass the nose really took off providing menthol, tar, anise, baking spices, vanilla, cinnamon with darker fruits floating in the background. On the palate wine is smooth with a polished across entry to finish. Flavors focus on dark raspberry plum, blackberry, ripe black cherry and perhaps some cranberry sweetness. Secondary dark chocolate, sage and other herbaceousness joined in, just delightful. Finish is silky and lingering with a touch a of smoke. Best part is that the wine just kept improving over glasses.

Couple notes to call out, typically The Puzzle is a Bordeaux blend, but I was unable to confirm the breakdown for the 2012, various sites referenced this as 100% cabernet. As a reminder only 75% of bottled wine must be the varietal on the label; so, hoping someone knows. Separately the Puzzle cuvée wasn’t crafted in 2011; so, this being a departure from the norm seems like a possibility. Wine making notes: wine is aged in 100% new French oak barrels for 22 months before final blend and unfiltered bottling.

Believe I was able to taste this wine back a number of years during one of our visits to the property. Highly recommended

  • Dark purple medium pale ruby edges. Menthol, tar, anise, baking spices, vanilla, cinnamon, wonderful bouquet. Light creamy mouthfeel, licorice mint leaf and dark raspberry plum and blackberry with some black cherry and even a little cranberry jam. Black tea, dark chocolate, sage, great dryness and a long lasting finish. This has everything: primary secondary and tertiary flavors with a smoky smooth acidity. Great bottle of wine.
