  • Great CV. Consistent notes.

  • Very pure red fruits, strong mineral/iron (quite nuits in character). Good length finishing with lightly mentholated tannins. Pale red to the rim, very light and aromatic flavours. This doesn't quite hit grand cru quality for me - the components aren't integrated enough. No secondaries yet. I think could improve over 3-5 years potentially getting more interesting but very pretty now.

  • Delicious fully mature GC. Nose offers up ripe small red fruits, trufle,leather,game and sous bois.Palate beautifully integrated with soft ripe fruit, silky tannins and great mineral acidity. Long finish.

  • Domaine René Engel Dinner (Fleur de Sel, Tras Street): The most enjoyable of the Clos Vougeot flight, this showed a nice bouquet, with lovely fruit aromas of dark cherries and blackberries, a touch of earth, and a little floral lift behind - a world of a difference from either the corked 1996 or the funky, masculine 1999. The palate had a leaner, sparer feel to it than the other two wines as well, but there was a nice elegance here, so that it seemed far less rustic, with fresh, clean black-fruited flavours of dark cherries and blackberries traced by fine-boned tannins and lovely 2001 acidity. Decent finish too, with a nicely savoury touch of earth and mineral and a little bit of orange peel. Less rounded and fine than the Grands-Echezeaux from the same house I think, but as far as the Clos Vougeots went, this was my favourite - it just seemed to be constructed in a different way, with cleaner wine-making, allowing the clarity of fruit and terroir to come out a bit more. Enjoyable. While good now, it has the bones to age nicely over the next 5 years and more.

  • Alcohol :: 13.5%
    Sweet red cherry and dark fruits, mocha, earth and mineral. Medium bodied. The fruits has really surfaced after 60mins or so in the glass. The mineral here is excellent, with slight rustic edge that telling you that I'm old school. It might be quite one dimensional in term of flavor, but it actually has got the verve and drive leads to the long length, powerful finished that infused tons of saline mineral and savoriness. Good character and soul here but might not be everyone cup of tea.
