  • Aged for 9 months in oak barrels with the lees. 13% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Neutral, pale limpid whitish-green color. Very fresh, cool and slightly reductive nose with very Montrachet feel; aromas of fresh golden apples, struck matchstick, some zesty grapefruit, a little bit of creaminess, light toasty notes, a hint of savory wood spice and a touch of steely minerality. The wine is medium-bodied, crisp and high-strung on the palate with very firm overall feel and intense flavors of tart green apples, creamy oak and nuances of savory wood spice, some key lime, a little bit of panna cotta, light stony mineral tones, a hint of herbal bitterness and a touch of fresh pineapple. The bracing acidity lends remarkable freshness, focus and sense of structure to the wine. The finish is crisp, steely and very high-toned with dry flavors of cool stony minerality, some pithy grapefruit, a little bit of tangy green apple, light chalky bitterness, a hint of creamy oak and a touch of savory wood spice.

A very crisp, fresh and still remarkably youthful world-class Chardonnay that shows bracing acidity, very judicious use of oak, nuanced fruit flavors and a cool, mineral core. The overall feel is very Burgundian, hovering between a Grand Cru Chablis and a cooler-vintage Puligny-Montrachet. If people still think the large Australian wineries make only heavy butter bombs, they really need to update their views - and this is a terrific example of the new, sophisticated style. Based on how very little development the wine shows now, at 7 years of age, it's easy to say this wine is really built for the long run. Wonderful stuff, expect the score to go up over the years. Recommended.
