Community Tasting Notes (10) Avg Score: 90.6 points

  • Out Barolo trip was frankly disappointing in terms of wine quality; this was one of the better ones and certainly the best one in an underwhelming Paolo Scavino tasting.

This had some complexity and depth, overall around 88 points and as such nothing that should cost 105 EUR (= price at the winery).

    Fair value around 20-25-ish Euros.
Insane that these wines are actually sold for >100 EUR.

  • Decanted 2.5 hrs. Wine is smooth with earthy and berry flavors.

  • A difficult to understand Barolo. Rustic, though not exactly showing traditional bouquet and profile markers. Tannic, with an astringent element at the back. A touch hotter than the listed alcohol would suggest. Best after several hours of air, and yet it remained a head scratcher. Not something I would be inclined to age over the long haul, although a few more years might serve it well. 91-92.

  • On day 1, straight cherry sour patch candy, too much for my taste. Love the fruit forward profile of Scavino’s cru barolo, and Carobric is one of my favorites, but this one is not ready. After a night open, it had settled down and showed a little of what it can become. Assumed with the early drinking profile of 2011 this would be young but ready to drink, stay away for 3-4+ years.

  • My second (and last) bottle and fortunately this one is clean. Decanted for two hours. As has been noted below by Ben Christiansen, this wine sort of epitomises traditionalism in Barolo. The nose is stemmy and tea-like, with a vegetal character, undergrowth and only hints of fruit, feels much older than its six years; the palate is slender and transparent, with a massive charge of grainy tannins, but somehow it is well balanced, with just the right amount of stuffing; the leathery finish is not too drying, and very good length. No idea when you should drink this. Instinctively, you might want to age this for a very long time waiting for the tannins to resolve, but a part of me fears that they never will and that we will end up with a skeletal wine dominated by its tannic structure and a potentially metallic adicity. For me the question is hypothetical, but I would drink this in the first decade of its life. (PS: how Walter Speller can call this modern and seductive, is beyond me).
